1. Read the three numbers in your notice
Pixel size is the width and height of the picture, for example 200 × 230 pixels. File size is how much space it takes, given as a range such as 20–50 KB. DPI is a print setting some forms check, usually 200 or 300. If the notice gives centimetres (like 3.5 × 4.5 cm), that is the shape of the photo; the pixels follow from it.
Rules change between exam cycles, so always use the numbers from the current official notice.
2. Start with a good photo
Use a recent photo taken in daylight, facing the camera, with both ears visible and no cap or dark glasses unless allowed. Stand in front of a plain light wall. If you only have a photo taken in a room, make the photo background white before resizing.
3. Crop and resize in one step
Choosing pixels and KB separately often goes wrong: a photo cropped to the right shape can still be 2 MB. The exam photo resizer loads your exam's rules, shows a face guide for the crop, and produces a file with the right pixels and KB together.
- Choose your exam, or enter the pixel size and KB range from the notice.
- Upload the photo and move the crop box so your face sits inside the oval.
- Download the photo and check the size and pixels shown under it.
4. Name and date, DPI and other extras
Some recruitments want your name and the date the photo was taken printed below it. Use the photo with name and date tool so the strip fits inside the final size. If the portal checks DPI, change image DPI only changes the setting, not the picture.
If the form gives only a KB limit and no pixel size, you can simply resize image to 20KB or the limit your notice states.
Common reasons photos are rejected
File above the maximum or below the minimum KB; the wrong pixel size or shape; a dark or patterned background; the face too small in the frame; an old or blurred photo; or a PNG when the form wants JPG. Each of these is fixed by re-doing the steps above with the numbers from the notice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between pixels and KB?
Pixels are the picture's width and height; KB is the size of the file. Two photos with the same pixels can have very different KB depending on the JPG quality, which is why forms often give both.
My photo is under the minimum KB. What do I do?
Save it at higher quality, or use the Increase Image Size in KB tool, which raises the file size without changing how the photo looks.
Can I use a selfie?
Only if it meets the rules: front-facing, evenly lit, plain light background and no filters. A photo taken by someone else from about a metre away usually looks better.
