Frequently asked questions
Will converting to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the JPG's pixels exactly, so nothing gets worse, but any blur or blockiness already in the JPG stays. Converting is useful for compatibility and further editing, not for repair.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless: it keeps every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail you cannot see. For photos, a PNG is often 3–10 times larger. If you need a small file, keep the JPG, or use Compress Image afterwards to reduce the PNG's colours.
Does this make the background transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background. Transparency has to be created by removing the background, which is a different tool.
Can I convert JPG to PNG on my phone?
Yes. It works in Chrome, Safari and Firefox on Android and iPhone. Converted files go to your Downloads or Files app.
Is there a file size limit?
Each image can be up to 50 MB. Very large photos (over 24 megapixels) are scaled to 24 megapixels so phones do not run out of memory.
