This word counter checks the length of an essay, assignment, blog post or speech as you type. It understands Hindi and other Indian scripts as well as English, and also shows how long the text takes to read or say aloud. For social posts, use the character counter; for SEO, the keyword density checker.

Tips for best results
- For exams with a word limit (for example a 250-word essay), paste your answer here before writing it out neatly, so you can trim or expand while it is still easy.
- A 5-minute speech is roughly 650 words at a comfortable pace. Use the speaking time to plan school speeches, presentations and YouTube scripts.
- Blog posts that answer a question fully are usually 800–1,500 words; quality matters more than hitting a number.
- Check “Most used words”: if one word appears far more than others, vary it to make the writing read better.

Frequently asked questions
Does it count Hindi words correctly?
Yes. Many counters split Hindi words at matras or halant and over-count them. This one uses your browser's built-in language rules, so a word like “प्रधानमंत्री” counts as one, and mixed Hindi-English text is counted correctly.
Why do Word and this tool give slightly different counts?
Programs treat hyphenated words, numbers like 1,000, and symbols such as & differently. The difference is usually one or two words per page. For exams, the examiner's counting method matters, so leave a small margin.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser and your text is not stored or uploaded. Refreshing the page clears it.
How is reading time calculated?
At 200 words per minute, a typical speed for reading on a screen. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a speech or video.
