This Hindi word counter counts words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in Hindi text, treating every conjunct and matra correctly, so प्रधानमंत्री is one word. Paste your text, or type it in English letters and it turns into Hindi as you write.
How to use the Hindi word counter
- Paste your Hindi text into the box, or type it in English letters (each word converts on space).
- Read the counts below the box: it will count Hindi words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs.
- Check the reading and speaking time for speeches and presentations.
- Edit until you reach the word limit, then copy the text or save it as a Word file.
Tips for best results
- Sentences ending in the danda (।) are counted as sentences, the same as those ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Board exams and competitions often set limits such as 150 or 250 words. Keep a margin of a few words, because examiners may count compound words differently.
- Text in the old Kruti Dev font cannot be counted correctly; convert it first with Krutidev to Unicode.
- For English or mixed text, and for social media limits, the general word counter and character counter show more detail.

Frequently asked questions
Why do other counters give a different number for Hindi?
Some tools split Hindi words at a matra, halant or nukta, and count one word as two or three. This counter uses your browser's built-in Unicode word rules, which keep each Hindi word whole.
How are characters counted in Hindi?
As a reader sees them. क्षि is shown as one character even though it is stored as four Unicode code points. If you need the raw code-point length for an SMS or a database field, use the character counter.
Can I count words in a Hindi PDF?
Yes, if the PDF has real text. Copy it out with PDF to Text and paste it here. Scanned PDFs are pictures and have no text to count.
Can I type here instead of pasting?
Yes. Type in English letters, such as “mera bharat mahan”, and each word becomes Hindi when you press space. Press Ctrl+G to type English words.
Is my essay saved or uploaded?
It is kept only as a draft in this browser, so a refresh does not lose it. Nothing is uploaded. Press Clear to remove it.
