How to Reduce Photo Size in KB

This is how to reduce photo size in KB while keeping the picture clear. A phone photo is often 2–5 MB, but forms, websites and chats need it at 20, 50 or 100 KB, and you can get there in a few seconds.

Why phone photos are so large

Modern phones take photos of 12 megapixels or more and save them at high quality. That detail is useful for printing, but an upload form shows the photo at a few hundred pixels wide, so most of the file size is wasted.

1. Lower the JPG quality first

Reducing JPG quality from 95% to about 70% often cuts the size in half with no visible difference. Compress image does this for a whole batch and shows the saving under each photo.

2. Set an exact limit in KB

When a form gives a limit, let the tool search for the best quality that fits. Use resize image to 20KB for exam photos, or resize image to 50KB for most document photos. The pixel size is reduced only if quality alone cannot reach the limit.

  1. Choose the photo.
  2. Check the maximum (and minimum, if your form gives one).
  3. Download the result and check the KB shown.

3. PNG and screenshots

PNG files are lossless and can be ten times larger than a JPG of the same picture. Convert PNG to JPG first, then compress.

What if the photo becomes too small?

Some forms also set a minimum such as 20 KB. If your file is below it, increase image size in KB raises the size to an exact value without changing how the photo looks.

Frequently asked questions

Does reducing KB reduce the quality?

A little, but usually not visibly. Only when the limit is very small, such as 10 KB, does the picture also need fewer pixels.

What is 1 KB?

1 KB is about a thousand bytes. A 20 KB limit means the file must be at most about 20,000 bytes; aim slightly below to be safe.

Can I reduce many photos at once?

Yes. The image tools accept several photos together and let you download them one by one or as a ZIP.
